Signed Pucks Score With Hockey Fans

Signed pucks are a great way for hockey fans to get closer to the game and are popular with collectors who have a limited amount of space.

Storage

One of the nice things about collecting autographed pucks is that they are a fairly small item. They can be stored without taking up a lot of space because they are flat, unlike the game items used in other sports.

The best way to store your signed pucks is to keep them in clear acrylic cases.  Square cases are approximately the size of a puck and will protect them from stains or keep the autograph from getting smeared or smudged. These can be stored next to each other and approximately 50 can be fit into an ordinary shoebox.

If you have a large collection of hockey pucks, buying acrylic cases can become quite costly. A less expensive way to store hockey pucks is in plastic bags.

Obtaining Autographs

Hockey has done a great job of becoming fan friendly over the years. Other than in cities with hockey teams, it generally isn’t as popular as baseball, basketball, or football, and the sport has made its players easily accessible.

Pucks, unlike footballs, basketballs, or even baseballs, aren’t extremely bulky. They’re not exactly lightweight, but they aren’t a large item. Collectors can carry several to have signed at training camp, open practice sessions, or before or after games. Many players will also sign an autograph through the mail if you send it in care of their team. Unlike trading cards, however, it is a bit more costly to send a hockey puck because of its weight. But if you check around and find players that have good reputations of signing through the mail, it might be worth the cost. When you factor in the cost of return postage and buying a puck, it can cost around $10.00 to send a puck and get it back.

When having pucks signed, the best item to use is a Sharpie marker. While blue or black may be fine for signing the white logo part of a hockey puck, gold or silver is the preferred color of choice among most collectors. With one of those colors, collectors can choose to have their puck autographed on the black outer edge and the autograph will still show up clearly.

One thing fans should be extremely wary of when obtaining autographs is that because pucks are made of rubber, autographs can smear even long after they’ve been signed. Fresh autographs should immediately be placed into a storage case to protect against any such damage.

Another way to obtain autographs is to buy them directly from a memorabilia store or online. Obviously, authenticity is always an issue, so it’s important to do your homework and perform due diligence before buying from anyone.
