Signed baseball art can be the perfect items to decorate a game room or an office. Many of these prints commemorate special events or moments in sports history. Artists capture these special moments in a variety of ways such as lithographs, sketches, and prints.
Many types of moments can be depicted in prints or lithographs – special home runs, perfect games, milestone touchdowns or goals, retirements, or other record-breaking moments in sports. Prints can also be created as individual stand-alone type pieces or as part of a series.
Unlike other items such as photographs, many signed lithographs are autographed by both the artist and the athlete(s) depicted. The artist or company producing the print may work directly with the athlete to sign a limited number of pieces. For this reason, many autographed prints are easier to authenticate than other items. Many times an artist will provide a letter of authenticity or certificate stating when and where an athlete autographed the item.
One thing that fans may notice, especially when it comes to lithographs created by individual artists, is that the players depicted may not be pictured in his respective team’s uniform. The logos may also be missing or airbrushed. This is generally done on purpose in instances where the artist has not purchased a license from the applicable sports league (i.e. MLB, NFL, NBA, or NHL) to use the entity’s team logos. Such a license usually costs thousands of dollars and some artists feel as if it’s not worth the additional money, depicting the player in a generic jersey.
In addition to those created by individual artists, some sports memorabilia companies such as Upper Deck have produced their own prints.
Signed prints can come in a variety of sizes, but larger ones are generally more desirable. Many of these larger poster-sized prints are 16X20, 18X24, 24X36, or even larger. These prints are generally colorful alone, but look even better when displayed in a frame with mat. When framing prints and lithographs, it’s important to use glass with UV coating to prevent the picture and signatures from fading due to light. The cost for framing (particularly, custom framing) can be significant, so if you want to plan on simply storing your signed baseball art (or works from other sports) to keep them out of harm’s way, a less expensive option is a triangular or circular mailing tube. It’s important to use extreme caution when rolling up prints or lithographs. Even the smallest crease made will be come out and when framed, will likely be very noticeable.
Prints can be limited to any number determined by the artist or company. Generally, the fewer the quantity available, the more valuable the item. And if each print is numbered, the low numbers are usually more desired by collectors. Lower numbers are valued a bit more as they were some of the first prints to be printed and signed. Finding a lithograph numbered first in the series is extremely rare as many times the artist or company will keep the first several for themselves.
A signed piece of baseball art from a favorite athlete or sports moment may be just the thing your collection needs.
