Autographed Jerseys Provide Stunning Display

Displays

When framed, autographed jerseys are among the most attractive types of signed sports memorabilia you can purchase.

There are generally two main types of framing display options. First, is a standard frame, generally with a colored backdrop. This can be a nice option and gives viewers a close-up look at the signature(s). Framing prices can vary greatly – especially if a custom frame is utilized. Inexpensive large frames can be purchased for as little as under $50.00, while custom framing could cost hundreds of dollars, depending on the type of glass and frame used.

Shadowboxes are the other main style. These are a miniature cabinet of sorts and allow the jersey to hang freely. The jersey is not pressed against the glass and shadowboxes are becoming more popular among collectors. Shadowboxes, however, can be a bit pricey as well – good ones can cost approximately $200.00.

Both options are great ways to display autographed jerseys and are attractive options because it doesn’t allow guests to actually touch the item. Most jerseys are colorful and because fans can easily identify with their favorite team’s jersey, they stand out when displayed on a wall.

In either case, collectors should use a frame or shadowbox with UV-coated glass. This type of glass will block out light, which can cause signatures to fade over time. The more faded the signatures, the less valuable the item.

Sometimes, however, you may want to do more with your jersey – perhaps wear it to a game. This is, of course, a risky proposition when it comes to ensuring your jersey does not get damaged. An autographed jersey is different than an unsigned one that can be washed. If you truly don’t care about the value of the jersey, though, wearing it to a game can be a great conversation starter.

Types of Jerseys

Any type of jersey can be collected – baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, etc. Because many baseball jerseys feature pinstripes, most collectors prefer to have an item signed on the number. This has carried over to other sports and that is generally the preferred placement for signatures.

Once you’ve decided what sport you wish to collect, the next step is to determine what type of jersey you want – authentic or replica.

Obviously, most collectors want authentic jerseys just like the players wear. But these are significantly more money than replicas. An authentic baseball jersey costs around $200.00 - $250.00 from Major League Baseball team websites. Official replicas can be purchased for under $100.00 and lesser replicas can be had for even less. Add in the cost to obtain a signature from an autograph signing at a card show or event and you can approach $350.00 - $400.00 for an authentic autographed jersey.

Authentic basketball and football jerseys can cost around $300.00 from the NBA and NFL online stores, but of the four major sports, hockey is the most expensive. NHL.com offers authentic hockey jerseys for nearly $400.00 each.

Unfortunately, like many pieces of equipment such as helmets or bats, autographed jerseys cost significantly more than other signed items such as balls or photographs. But if you have the money to spend, these look great when displayed appropriately.  Look in the upper right of this page for an ad from Pro Sports Memorabilia if you're looking for outstanding display cases for purchase.
